Small Chest Freezers

Though I am a big fan of small chest freezers I can certainly not tell you that they don’t have their disadvantages. One of their most famous disadvantages is that small chest freezers are notoriously difficult to defrost as they do not possess an automatic defrost mode. This means that should you need to defrost your new small chest freezer, it will take up to a day of plugging it out and not having anywhere to store your frozen goods.

There is then the matter of organization. While all manufacturers provide baskets to try to help with this, small chest freezers will never be as convenient when it comes to organization as the upright variety. While the upright variety has many different shelves and door compartments, small chest freezers are simply big square boxes. This problem can be minimized through the use of boxes and keeping an eye on where you put everything but it is still not particularily convenient.

And speaking of inconvenience, the last disadvantage of small chest freezers is that they require a lot of bending to reach down for food. Though less of an issue with particularily small chest freezers, this variety of freezer is certainly not to be recommended for anyone with a bad back.

Small chest freezers are becoming more and more popular in the UK however and this is because they also offer a number of significant advantages over the upright variety.

The first advantage of small chest freezers is of course the cost. Small chest freezers are both cheaper to purchase and cheaper to run. Small chest freezers are significantly more energy efficient due to their superior insulating properties and as a result of this, keeping your frozen goods frozen requires far less electricity.

There is then the matter of storage which is particularily important for those looking for small chest freezers or any small freezer for that matter. When compared with an upright freezer of identical dimensions, a chest freezer will offer over fifteen percent more storage space. And as well as offering increased storage space over the upright variety, there is also the matter of awkwardly shaped items, there is pretty much nothing that will not fit in a chest freezer.

Essentially the choice between a small chest freezer and a freezer of the upright variety primarily comes down to what your priorities are. Should you have to cash to spend and the idea of highly disorganised small chess freezers sends your neurotic neurons firing in rage, you may be better off sticking to the upright variety. On the other hand, if you are simply looking for the most economical solution to your frozen food storage needs, small chest freezers are likely to be exactly what you need.
